Messaging and texting apps help you save money by skirting fees that your phone service provider might otherwise charge. But it's difficult to find a messaging app that's reliable, has a strong network of users so you can actually talk to your friends and family, and won't shock you with add-on charges. If you happen to own a Windows Phone and you're in the market for a messaging app that covers what you're looking for, check out these top five apps. 5. Nimbuzz Messenger(Opens in a new window)FreeNimbuzz Messenger is VoIP app that allows you to make unlimited free calls and send free messages to other Nimbuzz users. It can easily become your all-in-one mobile communications center since you can connect to your social media and IM accounts and send messages through the app. It's a nifty app that has an easy-to-use interface and other cool features like contact management, free avatars, and a chat buddy that lets you send tweets. Nimbuzz also offers a calling service called NimbuzzOut that allows you to make calls to landlines and mobile phones, both in the U.S. and internationally for a low rate. So if you're looking for a one-stop Windows Phone messaging app, Nimbuzz is what you need. 4. WhatsAppFree for the first year; 99 cents per year thereafter Of all the texting applications available, WhatsApp probably has the largest user base. Similar to Nimbuzz and other messaging services, you can send free text, video, and audio messages to other WhatsApp users. Feature-wise, it has a few more customization options than your standard text-messaging service: multimedia messages, inserting emoticons, and changing the conversation's wallpaper are among its abilities. Another awesome feature is recording video and audio clips to include in your conversation. Unless you're content with your existing instant messaging app, you'll definitely want to try this one out.3. Viber(Opens in a new window)FreeThis VoIP app aims to improve users' talk and text experience with some impressive features like group chatting with up to 40 people, pinning conversations to your home screen, Live Tiles and push notifications even when the app is off. You can save money in the process when you send free calls and text messages to other people who use Viber (though it only applies when you're on a Wi-Fi network). Users also have the ability to transfer their conversation (voice or text) to their desktop provided they have the Viber software installed. The app itself is well designed, and if you're looking to save money in voice calls (especially to other countries), Viber might be what you're looking for.2. Kik MessengerFreeAs far as simplicity goes, Kik Messenger takes the cake. It's easy to set up and use and, best of all, it doesn't contain ads. The app doesn't require a phone number, making it more private than other messaging services. Some of its features include the ability to show whether your contact has received and read your message, and group chatting with up to 10 people. Unfortunately, the Windows Phone version lacks some of the goodies that are in the iOS version, such as video and audio messaging, and voice calling. However, if simplicity and privacy are what you're looking for, Kik Messenger is the app for you. 1. SkypeFreeSkype is an all-in-one communication service, offering video, voice, and text chatting with other Skype users, and is great for keeping in touch with certain people like long-distance relatives or friends. It has the ability to run in the background and display notifications for new messages and calls. Unfortunately, Skype for Windows Phone doesn't have asynchronous video or audio messaging, file-sharing, or screen-sharing. Regardless, it offers many methods of communication, making it the leading VoIP and video-calling service for Windows Phone.

Everywhere I search I get the advice "The Windows Phone App for Mac is available form the Apple App Store". I have never been able to find it. Has anyone? It automatically installed when I got my new phone at the beginning of the year after this happened with my Win7 phone and I ended up with a phone memory full of photos, videos and data I couldn't sync.
Yes, i have this same problem, It looks like apple is not working with microsoft anymore. I uninstalled me windows app because it could not communicate with my phone anymore and when I tried to re-install the windows app again from mac app store it said it is not available.
Let me just be sure I understand this. Apple, by not making the windows phone app available for download on the U.S. store, is preventing anyone in the U.S. who owns a windows phone (I got one b/c it was the cheapest smartphone available) from transferring music files or pictures or whatever from their Mac to their windows phone. If this is right, that is so lame. Ultra lame. 2b1af7f3a8
